This Day in History: Ringo Starr Joined The Beatles

On the 18th of August 1962, 60 years ago yesterday, Sir Ringo Starr joined famous rock band The Beatles. He replaced drummer Pete Best, who had been a part of the group for two years. Producer George Martin did not feel that Best's drumming was good enough to support the band, and Ringo was hired just days after Best's departure. Best was first replaced with a session drummer for a recording, which is when concerns first arose about his playing. Martin decided that, at least on record, Best would be replaced with a better drummer. Upon learning this, Beatles members Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison decided to permanently remove Best from the band to ensure they did not lose their record deal. Manager Brain Epstein then hired Ringo, who, aside from a short break in 1968, remained with The Beatles until their split in 1970.
