Scientists have found genetic mutations in blood samples from 14 NASA astronauts who flew Space Shuttle missions between 1998 and 2001. The study was published in the journal, Nature Communications Biology, which detailed the mutations found in the DNA. The transmutations can be caused by excess exposure to ultra-violet radiation, and do not present a serious threat to the astronauts' health. Researchers suspect that the mutations have been caused by space radiation. Last year, NASA considered changing the radiation limit astronauts can be exposed to, as astronaut health has become more pertinent than every before, what with the longer and more frequent missions NASA is launching.

Lead Author David Goukassian Claims,

"The presence of these mutations does not necessarily mean that the astronauts will develop cardiovascular disease or cancer, but there is the risk that, over time, this could happen through ongoing and prolonged exposure to the extreme environment of deep space."
