A black hole 3 billion times bigger than the sun has been discovered by an Australian team of researchers in the centre of the Centaurus Constellation. The cosmic entity devours a chunk of matter equivalent to one Earth per second. The supermassive black hole is the brightest and fastest growing in 9 billion years. The researchers on the team said that is was like finding a "very large, unexpected needle in the haystack". It has an unusually wide event horizon (the boundary where nothing can escape from), and the team is now trying to determine why it remains so hungry for matter despite other black holes slowing down as they grow. While there are many theories about the origin of the behemoth, such as two galaxies colliding, it will be hard to ascertain the creation, as it is unlikely that scientists will find another similar black hole.
